Sofa Cleaning

May 10, 2022

Sofas and couches bring a lot of comfort in the home. This is where we can put our feet up and relax and for many this is where the whole family comes together to enjoy their favourite tv shows and movies.

Because of all this activity, they’re bound to get dirty and/or stained from time to time, so here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean your fabric sofa at home.

Before using any cleaning detergents, check the manufacturer’s instructions for care, as well as the cleaning codes to find out whether to use a water based cleaner (W), solvents and water based clear (S/W), or solvents (S).

What you’ll need:

  • Handheld vacuum
  • Steamer
  • Brush
  • Baking soda
  • Appropriate cleaning detergents
  • Soft drying cloth

First, begin by brushing the sofa to loosen stains, and bring any dirt and dust to the surface. Then vacuum thoroughly, making sure you remove all loose particles and crumbs. Next, sprinkle baking soda over the couch and leave for 20 minutes. This will help lift stains and to remove bad odours. Once the baking soda has absorbed the stains, vacuum once again and spot treat and/or steam clean. Finally, pat dry any wet areas using a dry cloth and leave the sofa out to dry.

*Make sure the sofa is completely dry before using so as to avoid staining and dirtying.
